Supervisor Guidelines
Since this is an academic program, please comply with these guidelines and procedures.
After an AIP counselor faxes/sends you information about a potential intern and the student contacts you for an interview, please:
1. Interview the student.
2. Develop the project assignment. The project/job description must be outlined before the student starts the internship.
3. Complete the Learning Agreement describing the proposed project/job description assignment. The Learning Agreement must be completed for the student to enroll for academic credit. When the student wishes to obtain eight or more units of credit, we ask the supervisor/mentor to give a more detailed description of the job/project. Please click Requirements for more information on the different unit options and their corresponding requirements.
4. Internships must meet the following requirments
Since the Academic Internship Program is an upper-division course, the student’s responsibilities must be linked to academic course work and may not include:
- Sales related activities
- Students are not permitted to participate in telemarketing or cold calling of any kind
- Clerical and general office duties should be kept to a minimum
- Resources, equipment and workspace required to perform internship duties must be provided by the internship site/host site Students are therefore not permitted to complete internship hours from home.
- Students must be supervised by a professional in the field, not by peers; therefore the student cannot be considered the resident expert.
- The Academic Internship Program cannot provide credit for jobs
- The internship must be a new experience for the student. An exeption might be made once for enrollment of a repeated internship. See AIP for more details.
5. Verify enrollment. On the first day of the internship, please verify with the student that he/she has enrolled for credit in the Academic Internship Program. Students who fail to enroll are no longer affiliated with this program.
6.Establish a clear understanding with the student on company policies, especially guidelines on confidential information.
7. If there is a significant change in the student’s project assignment during the internship please submit a revised Learning Agreement.
8. Exit Evaluation Form It is the student's responsibility to printing out this form and bring it to you. It asks for you to evaluate the student's performance and sign to verify that the internship hours were fulfilled. This becomes part of the student’s school record. This form is part of the requirements for the student to receive a passing grade, and is also used in the process of picking our interns of the quarter. See Eligibility & Requirements under the Student Section for more details.
9. Contact AIP for any questions, concerns, or to report any significant changes that might impede the student’s completion of the internship.
Interns are hired without discrimination due to race, creed, national origin, sex, age, handicap, or sexual orientation.
