Faculty
Faculty advisors assist students in developing a research topic and provide guidance throughout the internship quarter. A faculty advisor is only required for students pursuing 4, 8, or 12 unit internships.
Anyone with a teaching assignment/title at UCSD can be a Faculty Advisor (FA) to a participating AIP Intern. A FA helps the student create a structure to investigate a particular research question or interest. The FA should not only approve the topic, but guide the student in designing a paper/project to address their research interest.
Faculty Advisors are responsible for the following:
• Approve student’s research paper/project topic
• Assist in obtaining appropriate resources.
• Being available to offer advice regarding the research paper/project throughout the course of the internship
• Grade the final paper/project on a Pass/NoPass basis
Faculty advisors should generally be from the student’s major department and have expertise relevant to the student’s interests and internship. They are responsible for reviewing the research paper for a Pass/No Pass Grade. Please see Research Paper Information for research paper/project guidelines.
Time Commitment
It is AIP’s desire for Faculty Advisors to meet regularly and be available to the student for assistance and advice in the development of a research project/paper during the span of one quarter. The Faculty Advisor and the student determine the nature and frequency of contact.
Departments
Any department or faculty member can take advantage of the opportunity to incorporate experiential learning with academics through AIP. From panel presentations and career/internship planning workshops to fieldwork course development, AIP can enhance educational opportunities in unique and exciting ways.
