Below is a list of majors, minors, colleges and other programs that partner with the Academic Internship Program, or count AIP toward degree requirements. If you do not see your program listed below, please follow the standard AIP application process and check in with your department or college regarding application to your degree.

Most programs follow AIP’s standard application process and course requirements, with exceptions and special procedures indicated below.  We strongly recommend early planning with your department and/or college advisors to determine how best to integrate AIP into your four-year academic plan.

Majors

Anthropology

Biology

  • Academic Course: BISP 197
  • Fulfills Major Requirement: Yes, may fulfill lab requirement
  • Additional Documents/Steps: Only approved labs at The Scripps Research Institute provide eligibility to enroll in BISP 197. Eligible labs will indicate required enrollment in BISP 197 within the internship description.

Cognitive Science

Communication

  • Academic Course: AIP 197
  • Fulfills Major Requirement: Yes, may fulfill intermediate elective with approved petition
  • Additional Documents/Steps: Submit a petition to the Communication department. Communication faculty advisor is assigned during the academic year. Summer interns must seek a faculty advisor independently.

Economics

  • Academic Course: AIP 197
  • Fulfills Major Requirement: No
  • Additional Documents/Steps: Search for internships that are identified as ‘Econ-Approved’ in InternLink. Be prepared to present a detailed internship description to potential faculty advisors.

Global Health

  • Academic Course: GLBH 199 or non-credit bearing
  • Fulfills Major Requirement: Yes
  • Additional Documents/Steps: All domestic internships are handled through AIP. Meet with AIP counselor prior to beginning internship search. Search for internships that are identified as ‘Global-Health’ in InternLink, or submit the Field Experience Pre-Approval Application on the Global Health Program website for an opportunity secured on your own. Option to complete 100-hour fieldwork requirement without credit, or enroll in GLBH 199 for four units.

International Studies

  • Fulfills Major Requirement: Yes with approved petition
  • Additional Documents/Steps: Meet with ISP advisor prior to internship to review initial research topic, and submit petition to ISP advisor

Public Health

  • Fulfills Major Requirement: Yes with approved petition
  • Additional Documents/Steps: Submit the following 3 items to the Public Health Student Affairs Office: 1. General Petition ("Departmental Exception" marked) 2. Personal Statement (1 -2 paragraphs explaining the merits of the internship) 3. Copy of AIP Learning Agreement with all required signatures

  • Fulfills Major Requirement: Yes, may be used to satisfy an upper-division elective with an approved petition and must secure a sociology faculty advisor.
  • Additional Documents/Steps: Submit a petition to the Undergraduate Program Coordinator along with the AIP learning agreement, in order to count towards the major.

  • Additional Documents/Steps: Faculty advisor must hold a permanent faculty appointment or request an exception from the Dean. Submit petition to Visual Arts department to request elective credit toward major.
