How does AIP Work?

Below is a step-by-step outline of the process for working with AIP interns.  For more detail, please see AIP's Supervisor Guidelines.

1. Determine what you would like to have an intern do

  • Define intern responsibilities and/or projects
  • Identify what you would expect an intern to learn from the internship
  • Decide who will supervise the intern, and establish a plan for training them

Please see AIP's Supervisor Guidelines for our internship criteria and procedures. AIP staff is happy to provide consultation on developing a solid internship program.

2. Post an internship via REAL Portal (optional)

  • Create an account, or log into your existing account and submit an internship listing.
  • Only UC San Diego students will have access to your listing.
  • Interested students will email you their resumes via REAL Portal, or follow the application instructions you provide.
  • NOTE: Posting an opportunity via REAL Portal is not required. Students who have been offered an internship with your organization and want to enroll for academic credit may follow AIP's Application and Enrollment process to have their internship reviewed and approved.

3. Interview and select an intern

  • Contact students directly to arrange interviews.
  • Once you have offered an internship, work with the student to determine internship projects, schedule, and learning objectives. 
  • The student should submit a Learning Agreement to AIP via REAL Portal that will serve as the internship contract. The Learning Agreement will be routed to you for approval via an emailed link.

4. Supervise and evaluate the intern

  • Provide ongoing direction, oversight and feedback to the intern.
  • Create opportunities for the intern to work toward his/her learning objectives and gain an understanding of how your organization and industry function.
  • Submit the final evaluation form AIP sends at the end of the quarter.
